    Dr. Chip Bragg leads the series on Tuesday, September 5 with a lecture based on his newest publication. Released in January 2017 by the University of South Carolina Press, Martyr of the American Revolution: The Execution of Isaac Hayne, South Carolinian examines the sequence of events that resulted in his execution and the repercussions that event had on the political and military battle for American independence. Dr. Bragg is a practicing anesthesiologist in Thomasville, and this is his fourth book.

    Learn the ins and outs of wine making in South Georgia; presented by the Thomas County Historical Society and the Susina Plantation Winery as an extension of the popular Hands-On Heritage workshops, the Saturday, September 16th afternoon event is open to active members of the Historical Society and will last from 3pm-5pm. The program includes a guided tour of the vineyard and winery, as well as a tasting of the winery’s offerings in the dining room of the main house. Registration for this program is open now and current members of the Thomas County Historical Society may sign-up online using Eventbrite. Commemorative Susina Plantation Winery glasses will be available for purchase online with registration and at the event.     The second program in our series on Tuesday, September 19 will explore the experiences, motivations, and hardships of the Civil War Soldier. In, “A Soldier’s Life,” the Company C, 61st Georgia Infantry Living Historians will inhabit a reenactment of a Civil War encampment, portraying soldiers from both the Union and Confederate forces. Participants will learn more about the experiences on either side of the conflict through first-person narratives presented by the “soldiers” themselves. Participants are encouraged to interact with the reenactors. This program is appropriate for all ages.

    he Thomas County Museum of History & Lapham-Patterson House will open their doors free of charge on Saturday September 23, 2017, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s thirteenth annual Museum Day Live!, an initiative in which participating museums across the United States emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based facilities, which offer free admission every day, and open their doors for free to those who download a Museum Day Live! ticket. Tickets available starting August 25.

    Smithsonian recognizes the extraordinary power of museums, and other cultural institutions, to provide visitors with insight and inspiration. The event represents a nationwide commitment to boundless curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge wherever you are. Over 200,000 people downloaded tickets for last year’s event, and this year’s event is expected to attract more museum-goers than ever before.
