This year we’re adding a few new twists to the perennial favorite, Time Travelers Club History Camp. Have no fear, our revamped Camp Dawson is rooted in the same activities and themes that have inspired and engaged Thomas County campers for nearly 20 years, just with a little added museum mischief and adventure. In addition to our traditional hands-on history-based activities, we want to engage our campers in new explorations of the community around us. We are embracing the elements of S.T.E.A.H.M: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, History, and Math that can be found and applied in our own backyard about our community’s evolution.
Campers will progress through Thomas County history, starting with the Native Americans and work their way up to the 20th-Century using resources available here at the Museum and in our surrounding neighborhood, including the Lapham-Patterson House. We’ll explore what makes Thomasville and Thomas County unique while putting ourselves in the place of past Thomasvillians. We hope that you’ll join us June 5-9, 2017 for a week of adventure and discovery! Includes all craft supplies, camp shirt, and snack daily.
We’re also expanding our focus at what was formerly known as Victorian Thomasville Camp. Now called, Camp LPH, we will explore the time period between the 1880’s when the Lapham-Patterson House was constructed, to the 1940’s, nearing the end of the Patterson family’s occupation of the house. This means we can dig deeper into the house, its history, and its families. Camp LPH will still culminate in the campers’ construction and launch of hot air balloons to commemorate the c. 1886 launch of a hot air balloon over Thomasville. Camp LPH, June 20-22, 2017. Includes all craft supplies and snack daily.
Camp registration information will be mailed to members of the Thomas County Historical Society soon. At that time, rising 3rd through 6th graders may register for both Camp Dawson and Camp LPH.
